There's no denying that the brakes are one of the most important components of a motor vehicle. You rely on them to help keep you, your family, or your friends safe every time you get behind the wheel.

In the event you're suspecting that your brake pads might be getting toward the end of their lifespan, the Watermark Ford of Marion team has put together this quick guide. If you live or work near Marion, Herrin, or Carbondale, Illinois, take a moment to read through it to find out the best time to have your brakes replaced.

When to Change Brakes

The brake system is made up of a rotor with two brake pads on either side. When you press down on the pedal, the pads squeeze down on the rotor to bring the vehicle to a stop. Brake pads can go anywhere between 40,000 and 50,000 miles before needing to be changed out. If you're wondering when to change brake rotors, these range from 15,000 to 70,000 miles.

Hints That Your Brake Pads Need Some Attention

There are a few signs that you can watch out for that are there to let you know that it might be time to have your brake pads or rotors checked out. See below for a few of these:

  • Vibrating. If you're noticing that vibrations are occurring when you apply the brake pedal, it could mean that a rotor is warped. Be sure to have a certified automotive technician have a look right away.
  • Pulling. Unevenly worn brake pads or dirty brake fluid could be the culprit if you're noticing that the car is pulling to one side when braking.
  • Strange Noises. Hearing odd sounds like clicking, squeaking, or grinding every time you bring the car to a stop could be the result of the brake pads being loose or worn down too far.

Tips for Brake Pad Longevity

Take a quick look at the following things you can do to get the most out of your brake pads:

  • Coast as much as possible. Coasting often helps to take stress off of the brake pads. An example of when you might be able to do this is removing your foot from the gas as you approach an intersection.
  • Flush the Brake Fluid. Brake fluid should be flushed about every 25,000 miles or so to help keep the pads healthy.
  • Reduce Cabin Clutter. Keeping the inside of your car free of any unnecessary items alleviates stress on the brake pads by doing away with excess weight.
  • Try Not to Speed. Make sure you stay at or below the speed limit during your travels to avoid making the pads work as hard.
