SUVs are great for towing heavy loads. Whether you've got a boat, trailer, bike, or something else you want to bring with you on your adventures, the Ford Escape is ready for the job. If you'd like to learn more about the towing capabilities of the Ford Escape, our team at Watermark Ford of Marion put this outline together for everyone in Marion, Herrin, and Carbondale, IL.

How Much Weight Can the Ford Escape Handle?

When the Ford Escape is equipped with the available 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4 engine and is properly configured, it offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. With the standard 1.5 EcoBoost® I-3 engine under the hood, the Escape can tow a maximum of 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. Its hybrid engines can also handle a heavy load-up to 1,500 pounds when properly set up.

This is thanks in part to the Escape having the convenience of a 4-engine lineup. Each one is powerful and will assist you greatly with towing what you need to. These engines are as follows:

  • 1.5L EcoBoost® I-3: Produces 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. Comes with Auto Start-Stop Technology and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
  • 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4: Produces 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Comes with Auto Start-Stop Technology and an 8-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift® and paddle shifters.
  • 2.5L Hybrid I-4: Produces 165 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Comes with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT).
  • 2.5L Plug-in Hybrid I-4: Produces 165 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Comes with an eCVT.

Ford Escape MPG

When the rubber meets the road, you need a vehicle that can get you to where you're going without you having to constantly look at your fuel levels. Regardless if you've got something attached to your vehicle or not, the Ford Escape offers excellent MPG outputs to make sure you can stay on the road longer.

At its best, the Ford Escape can get up to an EPA-estimated 28 city and 34 highway MPG with its traditional gasoline-powered engines. Meanwhile, the hybrid models can get up to an EPA-estimated 44 city and 37 highway MPG. As you can see, whichever version of the Escape you choose, you'll get an incredibly fuel-efficient vehicle. Be aware that your mileage can change depending on how much weight you're towing.

Do You Have Any Towing Tips?

Sure do! Whether you're a rookie who is doing this for the first time or a seasoned veteran who may need a refresher, there are quite a few things you can do to ensure the safety of your trailer and make your ride smoother throughout the process:

  • Make wider turns at curves and corners.
  • Adjust trailer brakes according to load.
  • Use a spotter when backing up unless you have rear view camera technology that makes a spotter unnecessary.
  • Allow for longer stopping distances.
  • Know your trailer weight and how much weight your vehicle can handle before taking off.
